Default So Guild Wars Beyond...

what's going to happen after GW2? I mean as I am reading the wiki I am seeing their is new content coming and "bigger things" coming in terms of the three campaigns and how they link to GW2. But what happens when GW2 comes? do we just go back to grinding with out GW releasing new content and story line?

I guess - does it all eventually end leaving us GW players to abandon GW and go over to GW2? or will there be more? can we speculate?

How does Anet plan to keep GW alive after GW2 is released? obviously the first 6months - 2 years GW will die....but people will come back. what will anet do?

what are they currently doing? I see WOC and what not....but....some of these "beyond" stories have left me with more questions then answers.

I mean we have 2000 years to cover....betweeen GW1 and 2

Thanks, didn't know that. I guess GW will be around 5-7 more years and become intertwined with GW2. Now, if they'd stop changing pve skills.

Events in GW2 take place 246 years after the current GW: Beyond content, and 250 years after the events of GW: Nightfall. See here. Maybe you mean GW3?

Speculation of the Live Team's plans after GW2's release is premature. My guess is that their decisions will depend on the level of activity in GW1 after GW2 release.

I cannot think of another MMO that has done what guild wars is doing.
Not seen a (insert MMO Name here)2 anywhere. A unique situation?

Also Lineage and Lineage 2.
And Ragnarok Onlne and Ragnarok Online 2.

When the things you want to do can't be done in a game, often the only thing you can do is another game.

Dota 2 is not an MMO, but it's also an example of that.

Well the fact that Stumme isn't even sure if we get to visit Elona now is pretty telling. If Beyond was in the cards for years this would be an inevitability. Maybe those costume sales just aren't doing so well anymore.

Or maybe it is quite hard to code all that stuff needed for Elona:Beyond that a team of 5 can't do it within a reasonable amount of time?

The story and everything is apparently done, they just don't have the resources to add it to the game at this time.

I stand corrected!

Are those MMOs that you all listed still running both games? If so then maybe we can expect GW to do the same thing (hopefully).

The Hall of Monuments is good incentive for people to go back to the first game, once GW2 is released, I think we'll see a good amount of players go back once the suddenly realise they can get a bunch of cool items from playing it (and perhaps not realising the amount of effort involved in getting them). It's a shame the situation is a bit up in the air at the moment, but I think GW1 will continue to have a decent playerbase for a good number of years. I really hope we get to see content like this for Elona and Ascalon at least.

View spoiler for various MMO info from Google, Wikipedia, and official sites.

NCSoft has shut down a number of MMOs, and the decision to maintain GW is ultimately their call. I don't anticipate GW's shutdown for at least another 2 years, if not longer, unless GW2 somehow fails catastrophically(unlikely), or everyone all over the world stops playing GW. However, I don't have any concrete information upon which to base any prediction for when GW servers will be shut down.

As to the topic of this thread, it is still my belief that continued updates will depend on activity in GW1 after the release of GW2. Also what FoxBat said. Sales in the ingame store and perhaps sales of the campaigns themselves will likely be a large, and possibly a primary, factor for future content updates.

More likely, he realized that there are more important stories to tell concerning the link between GW and GW2 than Joko's takeover in Elona (Ebonhawke springs to mind, most prominently).

The story of Joko taking over in Elona can honestly be told in an expansion in GW2 because he doesn't die. I would rather see that anyways than in GW1.

It doesn't matter if Ebonhawke is more important right now. Like I said, if Beyond was planned for years then visiting Elona is inevitable regardless of what story is told there. (and hence, the technical limitations are also irrelevant.) This is simply because the number of maps are very finite and they would need to use some of the Elonian ones for diversity over a long timeframe.

If we don't ever get to visit Elona in any form, I'd say that speaks to Beyond's longevity, or lack thereof.

That simple speaks to the limitations of the live team. They have, as far as I remember, FOUR people working on GW atm.
Do you expect these four people to pump out new content within a resonable timeframe? Sure, reusing old maps takes away some of the work. But then they will have to add new mobs, story (already done it seems), probably new hero (to follow the pattern), new quests, new triggers and so on.
I would like to see you and three pals manage all that within a few years.

would be nice to see something for elona, but since it took them so long to get out the 3 parts of woc.....dont see it happening

and when they turn off the servers for gw, I wont be playing gw2...so I hope its isnt for sometime as I still enjoy the game after playing it for 6 1/2 years--I still have lots more to do!

The Live Team will be around after GW2 launches so I expect they will continue to add content, whether they will be as focused on bridging the gap might be another story. Hopefully we will see the Elona chapter come out before GW2. Maybe if they release less content this time? I'd love to see an expanded Live Team for more content, they really proved with WoC Part 3 that they can produce some truly entertaining content in a very old game.

I'm having a hard time finding it, but I think I remember seeing on the GW2 blog that they intended to have as many people as possible move from GW1 to GW2, because they don't want to be competing with themselves. I also remember reading that they're not just going to turn GW1 off - people will still be able to play and all that - but their focus will be GW2. After GW2 comes out, I would expect a lot of the changes to be centered around making the content playable for the few still playing(a lot of which has already been done, with having 7 heroes per player, mercenary heroes, etc). I expect a lot of people are ready to move from GW1 to GW2 as it is.

These are just my thoughts though, I'll continue trying to find that article.

Edit: I couldn't find it so I'm giving up, maybe I imagined it.

Guild Wars Beyond will continue until either they run out of stories to tell in GW1's timeframe (if each story takes place after the previous, eventually you'll get to the point where 30 years have passed in game and the characters never aged....), or alterantively until the player base is so small and GW-based income so small it isn't worth keeping GW servers up.

That's my thoughts at least. All that's been officially announced is that Beyond will continue after GW2 is released. How they continue is unknown - as MisterB said, most likely depends on the level of activity in GW.

I can tell you here and now that not everyone will go to GW2 from GW1. They are completely different games. Some folks will probably buy GW2, expecting the same gameplay, but not like it and return to GW1. Others won't bother. Most will go to GW2, and then a small group will leave GW on a whole.

Beyond is leaving you with questions because it's meant to be opening the stage for GW2. Once they've finished opening the stage for it (I predict we have at least 3 more stories - one for Elona, one for Ascalon, and one for the Lunatic Court). After that, we may be getting individual tales not meant to solely/mainly set the stage for GW2.

Except that Joko takes over Elona 60 years after Nightfall - that is, 190 years before GW2.

Joko rules Elona in GW2. We will not see him ruling or even his successful invasion in GW1.

@Rhunex: Ebonhawke was mentioned during the earlier phases of War in Kryta - it was originally meant to be the closing of that arc, but when Stumme took over they went to WoC instead. The Elona arc was stated to be something they wanted to do after visiting Cantha when the now-called Winds of Change was first released.

As to "competing with themselves" - I recall the opposite, that they don't view it was competing with themselves. But I could be wrong on that.

Instead of having a list of links: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Beyond#Future_updates

This contains references to all the future content intended for Beyond. Or most at least.
